Students Requesting Accommodations
Sentara College of Health Sciences is committed to ensuring that all qualified individuals with disabilities have the opportunity to take part in the educational programs and services offered on an equal basis. The goal is to provide this opportunity in a setting that fosters independence and meets the guidelines of The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 (PL 101-336) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (PL 93-112). To do this, the College is guided by the recommended accommodations provided to us by each student's licensed healthcare provider.
Reasonable accommodations are made on an individual basis. The assessment of what, if any, accommodations are appropriate for a student is made on a case-by-case basis, considering the student’s disability, the impairment caused by such disability, and other circumstances specific to the student, the student’s course of study, and the college setting. As a result, there is no specific set of accommodations automatically assigned to a particular condition or diagnosis. Two students with identical diagnoses may have very different strengths and challenges, and, therefore, they will need different accommodations.
All students requesting accommodations must be able to meet the technical standards (physical and mental requirements) of the program with or without accommodations. Upon enrollment, students self-certify that they are able to meet the technical standards (physical and mental requirements) of the program.
Requesting Accommodations
Students may request accommodations through the Center for Student Success. Please email the Center at [email protected] to request an appointment. Students are encouraged to request accommodations as soon as possible, but may make the request at any time during the semester.
